Applications are invited for the 2017 Chevening UK Government Scholarships for International Students. This scholarships are available for all International Students

Scholarship description

Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders since 1983. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of award – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world

Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK

To be eligible for these scholarships, an applicant must,

Ø  Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country

Ø  Be willing to return to their country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after their award has ended

Ø  Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a postgraduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK

Ø  Have at least two years’ work experience (this may be up to five years for fellowship programmes, please refer to your country page for further details)

Ø  Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 13 July 2017

Ø  Meet the Chevening English language requirement by 13 July 2017

Applicants are not eligible for a Chevening Award if applicants:

An applicant is not eligible for a Chevening Award if s/he;

Ø  Holds British or dual British citizenship (unless applicants are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong)

Ø  Is an employee, a relative of an employee, or a former employee (since July 2015) of Her Majesty’s Government (including British Embassies/High Commissions, the Department for International Development, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, UK Trade and Investment, the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office), the British Council, a partner, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities

Ø  Has previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship. Chevening Alumni are not eligible to apply for a further scholarship but may be eligible to apply for a fellowship five years after completion of the first award.

Note: Chevening accepts English language tests from the following five providers:

Ø  Academic IELTS

Ø  Pearson PTE Academic

Ø  TOEFL iBT

Ø  Cambridge English: Advanced (CEA)

Ø  Trinity ISE II (B2)

The programme provides full or part funding for full-time courses at postgraduate level, normally a one-year Master’s degree at any subject at any UK University

A full Chevening Scholarship normally comprises:

Ø  Payment of tuition fees (see point 1.2.a in relation to MBA fee caps)

Ø  Economy travel to and from your country of residence by an approved route for you only

Ø  An arrival allowance

Ø  The cost of an entry clearance (visa) application for you only

Ø  A departure allowance

Ø  A contribution of up to £75 for TB testing, where this is required

Ø  A travel top up allowance

Ø  A monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover accommodation and living expenses. The monthly stipend will depend on whether you are studying inside or outside London. These rates are subject to annual review. Stipend payments will be made to you on or around the 21st of the month for the following full month. Where you arrive in the UK or leave the UK part way through the month, the stipend for that month will be adjusted as appropriate.

Note: Changes to the value of a scholarship

a) The value of your Scholarship will differ from the above in the following circumstances:

Ø  The embassy or high commission offers applicants a part award. This type of award will provide funding for tuition fees (no stipend or other allowance) OR stipend and allowances only (no tuition fees) only. In the case of part awards you will be expected to fund any difference

Ø  Applicants are offered an award to study an MBA. The Chevening contribution to the tuition fee is capped at £18,000. You will be expected to fund the difference. You may be required to demonstrate that you hold sufficient funding to cover the remaining tuition fee costs

Ø  Applicant’s Award is sponsored by a partner organisation. Any awards of this type offered may vary depending on the agreement reached with the co-sponsor

Ø  The FCO reserves the right to reduce a Chevening award or withdraw a Scholarship in instances where Scholars are beneficiaries of other significant awards, bursaries, prizes or earned income

Ø  All universities are expected to cover at least 20% of the cost of your tuition fees. In cases where a university is unable or refuses to provide such funding, the FCO reserves the right to withdraw the placement and send you to your next preferred choice. Alternatively, you may wish to cover the 20% amount yourself in which case we can continue with the placement at that university. Where this situation arises your programme officer will discuss the options with you

2. Funding additional to a Chevening Scholarship

Ø  Applicants must not accept any other form of publicly-funded award during your Scholarship and should not normally accept additional funding for purposes already covered by Chevening

Ø  Applicants must disclose on their application form whether they have applied, or intend to apply, for any other scholarships or awards

Ø  Where applicants are considering applying for or are offered additional funding after they have been selected, you must disclose this to your programme officer as soon as possible

Ø  Applicants may retain funding or other benefits not specifically covered by their Chevening Scholarship and may continue to be in receipt of a salary from your past employer during your Scholarship

Ø  The right is reserved to abate Chevening Scholarships in instances where you are a beneficiary of other significant awards, prizes or earned income

Ø  Applicants are not barred from taking part-time employment while in the UK but should not accept employment or internship opportunities unless agreed with the Secretariat

Ø  Applicants must comply with the employment conditions of their visa, university/college regulations, and the conditions of their award

Ø  Applicants should remember that their academic studies are of paramount importance and should be given due priority

Ø  In certain circumstances you may be given or seek an opportunity to undertake UK-based employment, or be in receipt of additional funding originating from either abroad or from within the UK during your Chevening Scholarship. In such cases the following rules will apply:

ü  Extra income up to an including £3,000 over a 12 month period, will not be subject to a deduction

ü  Extra income in excess of £3,000 and up to and including £7,000 will result in a £250 deduction in monthly stipend

ü  Extra income in excess of £7,000 and up to and including £10,000 will result in a reduction to half stipend rate

ü  Extra income in excess of £10,000 will NOT generally be allowed unless such funding is to cover a Scholar’s contribution where an award is subject to a fee cap or is a part award

The application deadline is 8 November 2016. The application timetable is as shown below;

From 9 November 2016	Sifting of applications against eligibility criteria
Mid-November to December 2016	Independent reading committees assess eligible applications
January to early February 2017	Applicants are shortlisted for interviews by the British Embassies/High Commissions in-country
By mid-February 2017	Applicants are notified that they have been selected for interview
6 March to 5 May 2017	Global interview period
Early June 2017	Announcement of interview results
13 July 2017	Deadline for UK university unconditional offers
13 July 2017	Deadline for meeting English language requirement
September/October 2017	2017/2018 Chevening Scholars commence their studies in the UK
