Seven Businesses you can do on Campus to survive or support yourself
Ø Laundry;
you can start this business once you have a washing machine and an electric
iron. The cost of both is approximately ₦....................... This business can also be started even
without a washing machine.
You can wash with your hands at first, then gather money to buy a machine. The important thing in this business is to wash and iron neatly.

Ø Hair
Salon/Barbing; this is another lucrative business on campus. The beauty of it
is that students will always make/barb their hair. If you are a gifted
stylist/barber or learnt it very well, you can survive on campus with this. If
you are buoyant enough, you can employ locals around and be the ‘boss’ while
studying.
Ø
Fast
Food; Fast food on campus includes bread & egg (Mishai), indomie, etc. Or whatever
is obtainable in your country and institution. This is usually needed by
students in the morning and at nights. Those who go to read at night
(night-classes) usually branch fast food joints. Once you are known to be good
and reliable, your joint starts booming and that means money in your pocket.
You can also make it easier for students by distributing it to them. This is
also a market strategy.
Ø Business
Centre; this includes internet services such as online payment of fees, booking
of accommodations, checking of results etc. You can start this business with
even a borrowed laptop and grow from there. Ability to use the internet is the
most important skill needed. Photocopying; on campus, there is always something
to photocopy; from academic materials to other documents. As a student, you can
reach an agreement with representatives of different classes to photocopy
documents for their class members on discount. This might mean that you don’t
need to rent a space anywhere, as the machine can be kept in your house.
Ø Tutorials;
you can prepare yourself and teach others. To do this, you must be willing to
sacrifice your time to study before others (maybe during holidays). I don’t
think you need any money to start a tutorial class. All you need is a classroom
at no cost and good knowledge of the subject(s) you intend to teach or
excellent results that will convince others that you are good at what you
intend to do.
Ø Retail
Sales; this is more viable for students who stay in hostels where prices are
hiked. You can go to the market for others. There are usually big markets where
things are relatively cheaper in most towns. You can go to such markets, buy
things mostly used by students (you will definitely buy them at the lower cost)
and sell on campus. These can be clothes, beverages, other food stuff, etc.
Ø There
exist part-time jobs in some institutions; you can make inquiries about
part-time jobs in your institution and benefit from such opportunity if it
exists in yours.
Remember, while doing the above, your primary aim of coming
to school is not for business. Therefore, your priority should be your
academics. Do not allow whatever amount of money you make distract you from
your primary aim. Plan your time very well so that you don’t loose focus.
